Dragon's Lair used LaserDisc animation in 1983, trading free movement for spectacular cartoon visuals far beyond what ordinary arcade hardware could draw in real time. The player-facing version of the idea is simple. Arcade cabinets were physical interfaces: steering wheels, trackballs, light guns and giant buttons could make one machine feel completely unlike the cabinet beside it. The phrase 'one credit' is arcade language for a promise that may not survive contact with the first boss.

A good piece of useless knowledge
Many classic games speed up as the player succeeds. Sometimes that was deliberate design, and sometimes hardware behavior helped create it; either way, difficulty rising with competence became an arcade tradition. Another rabbit hole starts here: Ms. Pac-Man introduced new mazes and more varied ghost behavior, helping prove that a sequel could meaningfully remix an arcade formula rather than merely repeat it.
