Alternating two-player modes created competition without simultaneous hardware; friends could share one cabinet and still turn every life into a public performance. Put that beside this bit of history: Q*bert used an isometric pyramid in 1982, making simple hopping controls look like movement through a strange three-dimensional toy. Arcade games specialize in the sentence 'I know exactly what to do,' immediately followed by not doing it.

Trivia unlocked

Space Invaders arrived in 1978 and helped turn videogame arcades into a mass phenomenon. Its descending rows of aliens created pressure with almost no story at all. The next fact takes a different route: Pac-Man was released in 1980 and deliberately moved away from the era’s heavy focus on space shooting. The maze, ghosts and eating mechanic made it immediately recognizable to a much broader audience.
