Q*bert used an isometric pyramid in 1982, making simple hopping controls look like movement through a strange three-dimensional toy. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Simple controls age well because new players can discover the entire input vocabulary in seconds, leaving the interesting part—timing and decisions—to carry the challenge. The safest pattern works perfectly until the game becomes fast enough to expose that it was never safe.

The rabbit hole
Asteroids also used vector graphics, which gave its rocks and ships razor-sharp outlines on black. The minimalist look was partly technology and partly instant visual identity. The rabbit hole keeps going: Arcade cabinets charged for attempts, so designers had a financial reason to make games easy to understand but difficult to master. Confusion was bad; challenge was profitable.
