Save points used to be partly a technical constraint, but designers learned to use them as atmosphere: a safe place feels safer when the game visibly lets you stop there. The history behind the category adds another layer: MUD1, developed in the late 1970s, combined a shared online world with text adventure and role-playing ideas long before 'MMO' became everyday vocabulary. The real final boss of many adventures is deciding which unfinished side quest you can emotionally abandon.

A little game-room trivia

The Legend of Zelda was designed around curiosity and exploration. Its creator has said childhood experiences exploring countryside and caves helped inspire the feeling of discovering something hidden. And this deserves a place in the same trivia drawer: Inventory limits are an old adventure-game trick. Designers use them to force decisions: the interesting question is not whether a treasure exists, but whether it is worth the space.
