Adventure design often works by planting a locked answer early and letting the player carry the question around for hours before the right item or clue appears. Put that beside this bit of history: The Legend of Zelda launched in 1986 and mixed action, exploration, items and secrets into a structure that encouraged players to remember places they could not yet reach. Inventory management is the ancient art of carrying twenty swords while being unable to pick up one flower.

Inventory limits are an old adventure-game trick. Designers use them to force decisions: the interesting question is not whether a treasure exists, but whether it is worth the space. The rabbit hole keeps going: Many fantasy RPG maps put dangerous areas farther from the starting point. That simple geography quietly teaches progression without needing a giant sign saying 'do not go here yet'.
