Zork grew from a mainframe adventure created by MIT programmers and later became one of Infocom's defining commercial text adventures. The player-facing version of the idea is simple. A well-made hub town is a pacing device: combat, story, shopping and recovery all meet in one safe place before the next outward journey. An unexplored patch of map can generate more curiosity than a treasure chest already sitting in front of you.

Ultima helped popularize large explorable computer worlds during the 1980s. Its later games experimented with morality systems where the player’s behavior mattered as much as defeating enemies. A separate bit of trivia: The term 'NPC' means non-player character. It came from tabletop role-playing language and became so common that it is now understood far beyond RPGs.
