King's Quest in the 1980s made an animated character visibly walk through illustrated scenes, changing how many players imagined a computer adventure should look. Another angle makes it more interesting: Adventure games often hide progression behind knowledge rather than strength; learning a password can be as powerful as finding a better weapon. A locked wooden door can defeat a character carrying enough magical equipment to redesign a mountain.

The curious bit
Baldur's Gate arrived in 1998 and helped revive large computer role-playing games at a time when the genre was considered commercially uncertain. Its party-based adventures helped set the stage for a new wave of CRPGs. A second surprise: MUD1 was created in the late 1970s and became an early multiplayer text world. Players shared the same virtual space, explored, fought and chatted long before online fantasy worlds had 3D graphics,or even pictures.
