Maps become emotional objects in exploration games. An empty corner is not blank space once the player suspects the designer hid something there. The category's past supplies the companion fact: Zork grew from a mainframe adventure created by MIT programmers and later became one of Infocom's defining commercial text adventures. A suspiciously empty room is the adventure-game equivalent of someone saying 'nothing to worry about.'
