A small but excellent fact

Early computer RPGs often used graph paper because players had to draw their own dungeon maps. Getting lost was not a bug; keeping notes was part of the adventure. There is also this: The Legend of Zelda was designed around curiosity and exploration. Its creator has said childhood experiences exploring countryside and caves helped inspire the feeling of discovering something hidden.
