A locked door is one of gaming's simplest promises: remember this place, because the world intends to become larger later. Put that beside this bit of history. Quest logs solved a very human problem: players forget what a fictional villager asked for three evenings ago much faster than the hero supposedly does. A suspiciously empty room is the adventure-game equivalent of someone saying 'nothing to worry about.'

Worth knowing

Colossal Cave Adventure, created in the 1970s, helped define text adventures. Players explored by typing commands, proving that a world could feel enormous even when the screen showed no graphics at all. One more curious detail: Early computer RPGs often used graph paper because players had to draw their own dungeon maps. Getting lost was not a bug; keeping notes was part of the adventure.
