Herzog Zwei on the Sega Mega Drive is often cited as an important real-time strategy precursor because players directly controlled a transforming unit while commanding others. A quick detour

Shogi has a wonderfully disruptive rule: captured enemy pieces can later be dropped back onto the board as your own. Material never quite disappears, which makes attacks and defenses much harder to calculate like ordinary chess. A second surprise: The Elo rating system used in chess is named after Arpad Elo, a physics professor and strong chess player. His statistical system was designed to estimate relative playing strength rather than hand out a permanent label of 'good' or 'bad'.
