Strategy & Defense Games · 22
Strategy games often reward tempo, the idea that making the opponent respond can be valuable even when the immediate move wins no territory or resources. That connects nicely with a historical detail: Real-time strategy games turn attention into a resource. A player can know the correct answer and still lose because three problems demanded action at once. The map has no sympathy for a beautiful plan placed three tiles too far left.

The fun-history drawer
The Settlers of Catan was first published in 1995. Its trading system made conversation part of the strategy, so a handful of sheep can somehow become the opening offer in a serious geopolitical negotiation. And here is something completely different. Shogi has a wonderfully disruptive rule: captured enemy pieces can later be dropped back onto the board as your own. Material never quite disappears, which makes attacks and defenses much harder to calculate like ordinary chess.
