Strategy & Defense Games · 12

Dune II from 1992 helped establish many conventions of the modern real-time strategy game: base building, resource gathering and direct unit control on one active battlefield. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: A choke point is powerful because geometry reduces how many units can fight at once, allowing a smaller force to make the map do part of the defending. Every perfect defense eventually meets an opponent who walks around it.

Curiosity break

Resource scarcity is a strategy designer’s best friend. If everything is affordable, choices are easy; if only one upgrade can be bought, the purchase suddenly becomes a plan. One more strange-but-useful detail: Turn-based strategy gives players unlimited thinking time in theory, but good design still creates pressure through limited resources, irreversible choices and threats that will mature on future turns.
