One-button games are a design stress test: when the input vocabulary is tiny, timing and level design have to provide almost all the depth. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: The sound of a successful action can become a timing cue on its own, which is why skilled players sometimes perform worse with the audio muted. Skill games turn muscle memory into a tiny employee who eventually starts working without supervision.

One for quiz night
Kendama looks like a wooden ball tied to a stick with cups, yet advanced players can link catches, spikes and balance tricks into long routines. The toy became especially standardized and popular in Japan during the twentieth century. The rabbit hole keeps going: The modern plastic hula-hoop craze exploded in 1958, but hoop games are ancient. People had rolled, spun and played with hoops made from wood, metal and other materials for centuries before plastic entered the picture.
