Skill & Precision Games · 89

A leaderboard changes a solo challenge into asynchronous competition: another player can become your rival without ever being online at the same moment. The design side has its own twist: Short restart times protect motivation; when failure lasts half a second, 'one more try' is almost frictionless. Precision games are where a millimeter becomes a biography.

Skee-Ball was patented in 1908. Rolling a ball up a ramp into scoring rings looks simple, but the combination of speed, angle and bounce turns a carnival machine into a surprisingly precise little physics problem. And this deserves a place in the same trivia drawer: A classic 'Robin Hood' shot in archery happens when one arrow strikes the back of another and splits or nests into it. It looks spectacular, but archers are not always delighted because the trick can destroy perfectly good arrows.
