This actually happened

Competitive shooters helped make 'LAN party' a household gaming phrase in the 1990s, when players physically connected computers on local networks to avoid slow internet connections. A second detour: Battlezone arrived in arcades in 1980 with glowing vector graphics and a first-person tank view. Looking through its visor-like display made the cabinet feel unusually immersive for a game built from simple green lines.
