Quake pushed first-person action into fully polygonal 3D worlds in the mid-1990s and became enormously influential for networked PC play. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: A boss with glowing weak points is basically a puzzle wearing armor and making a lot of noise. The crosshair is tiny because apparently all responsibility must fit into four pixels.

This actually happened
Competitive shooters helped make 'LAN party' a household gaming phrase in the 1990s, when players physically connected computers on local networks to avoid slow internet connections. A second detour: Battlezone arrived in arcades in 1980 with glowing vector graphics and a first-person tank view. Looking through its visor-like display made the cabinet feel unusually immersive for a game built from simple green lines.
