Puzzle & Thinking Games · 54
Puzzle difficulty is not just solution length. A short solution can be hard if the key idea is hidden, while a long solution can feel easy once the pattern is clear. The history behind the category adds another layer: The name Tetris combines 'tetra,' referring to four, with tennis, one of Pajitnov's favorite sports. The final piece always looks much more obvious after it is in the correct place.

Curiosity break
Tangrams use only seven pieces, yet those seven shapes can form thousands of silhouettes. The puzzle became an international craze after travelling from China to Europe in the nineteenth century. The category has another odd corner too: Nonograms, also called picture crosswords or Picross, reveal an image through number clues describing runs of filled cells. The picture is the reward for solving a tiny bookkeeping problem perfectly.
