Number puzzles can feel mathematical even when the arithmetic is trivial; the real work is often structure, ordering and exclusion. Put that beside this bit of history: Ernő Rubik designed his famous cube in the 1970s as a way to explore three-dimensional movement before it became a worldwide puzzle phenomenon. The phrase 'there must be a trick' is often correct and rarely comforting.

Trivia unlocked

The first modern-style newspaper crossword is usually credited to Arthur Wynne and appeared in 1913. Its grid was diamond-shaped rather than the familiar square layouts used today. A second surprise: Pentominoes are shapes made from five equal squares joined edge to edge. There are twelve distinct free pentominoes, and fitting them into rectangles can become surprisingly difficult.
