Puzzle & Thinking Games · 48
Match-three games are satisfying partly because one move can create a cascade, letting the board continue solving itself after the player's hand has stopped. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Puzzle designers use symmetry as both help and misdirection; a repeated pattern can reveal structure or convince the player to assume two sides behave the same when they do not. A hint used one second too late is not help; it is an accusation.

Tiny history break
Minesweeper was bundled with Windows 3.1 in 1992 and became familiar to millions of PC users. Its numbered squares turn probability and deduction into a game where one confident click can still end very badly. The rabbit hole keeps going: The first modern-style newspaper crossword is usually credited to Arthur Wynne and appeared in 1913. Its grid was diamond-shaped rather than the familiar square layouts used today.
