SimAnt from 1991 asked players to manage an ant colony, proving that simulation games could make a backyard ecosystem feel like a strategic world. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Queues are useful information. A line of customers is both evidence of demand and evidence that some part of the system cannot handle that demand yet. A budget surplus is money the game has not yet invented a problem for.

RollerCoaster Tycoon is famous among programmers because much of the original game was written in low-level assembly language by Chris Sawyer, an unusual feat for a large late-1990s PC game. A different kind of surprise: Theme Hospital turned hospital management into comedy, inventing ridiculous diseases while still asking players to manage queues, staff, rooms and money.
