Management & Simulation Games
Sandbox simulations replace a fixed victory condition with self-chosen goals, letting the player decide whether efficiency, beauty, scale or chaos counts as success. Another angle makes it more interesting. Maintenance costs are the quiet enemy of expansion: buying something is a one-time decision, but owning it can become a permanent line in the budget. A sandbox has no official final boss, so eventually the player becomes one by experimenting with the disaster menu.

Before the next game
One of the earliest famous business simulations was The Sumerian Game, developed in the 1960s. Players managed resources in an ancient city, decades before 'city builder' became a familiar videogame label. Another rabbit hole starts here: Lemonade Stand appeared on school computers in the 1970s and turned weather, pricing and inventory into a tiny business lesson. It proved that profit-and-loss arithmetic could become a game loop.
