The history behind the category adds another layer: Agent-based simulations become interesting when many simple individuals interact and create large patterns no single agent was explicitly told to produce. Automation is wonderful until the automated system begins producing the wrong thing extremely efficiently.

Tiny history break

The Sims was released in 2000 and made ordinary domestic life into a sandbox. Eating, sleeping, decorating and socializing became game systems, which sounded strange until millions of players tried it. The next bit is equally fun: RollerCoaster Tycoon is famous among programmers because much of the original game was written in low-level assembly language by Chris Sawyer, an unusual feat for a large late-1990s PC game.
