Cabinet artwork mattered before the first second of play. Side panels, marquees and control layouts had to sell an experience from across a noisy arcade. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Fixed screens force designers to make every object count because there is nowhere else for the action to hide. A flashing bonus object is the machine asking whether greed is stronger than survival instinct.

Curiosity break
Centipede used a trackball instead of a joystick. That control method let players move a cursor quickly and precisely, giving the cabinet a distinct physical feel. A second fact changes the subject nicely: Arcade cabinets charged for attempts, so designers had a financial reason to make games easy to understand but difficult to master. Confusion was bad; challenge was profitable.
