Attract modes are the self-running demonstrations arcade machines use when nobody is playing, effectively turning idle time into a tiny commercial for the next coin. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Fixed screens force designers to make every object count because there is nowhere else for the action to hide. A continue screen is thirty seconds of negotiation between pride, curiosity and another coin.

The curious bit

Donkey Kong introduced Mario in 1981, although he was originally known simply as Jumpman. His job was described as carpenter before later games permanently associated him with plumbing. There is a bonus fact hiding here too: Asteroids also used vector graphics, which gave its rocks and ships razor-sharp outlines on black. The minimalist look was partly technology and partly instant visual identity.
