Q*bert used an isometric pyramid in 1982, making simple hopping controls look like movement through a strange three-dimensional toy. A little game-room trivia

The attract mode on an arcade machine exists to sell the game while nobody is playing. Flashing demos, high scores and sound effects were basically tiny animated advertisements built into the cabinet. A second detour: Galaxian and Galaga made enemy formations feel more alive by sending attackers diving out of formation. Suddenly the safe-looking pattern at the top of the screen could attack from unexpected angles.
