Before the next game

Track & Field became an arcade hit in 1983 by turning athletic events into furious button tapping. Players quickly discovered that technique applied not only to virtual athletes but also to protecting the cabinet from enthusiastic human hands. A separate bit of trivia: Street Fighter II reached arcades in 1991 and helped make head-to-head fighting cabinets social magnets. A single machine could produce a queue of challengers and a local pecking order without any online matchmaking at all.
