Centipede, released in 1981, used a trackball and was co-designed by Dona Bailey, one of the relatively few women designing major arcade games at the time. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Alternating two-player modes created competition without simultaneous hardware; friends could share one cabinet and still turn every life into a public performance. A high-score table is social media for people limited to three letters and no comment section.

A fact with good replay value
Missile Command arrived in 1980 during the Cold War and gives the player no final victory, only increasingly difficult waves until the cities are lost. That bleak structure is unusually honest for a game about stopping incoming missiles. There is also this: NBA Jam exploded into arcades in 1993 with exaggerated dunks, two-on-two basketball and the famous 'on fire' state after consecutive baskets. Realism was invited, but spectacle got the better seat.
