Attract modes are the self-running demonstrations arcade machines use when nobody is playing, effectively turning idle time into a tiny commercial for the next coin. Another angle makes it more interesting: Lives systems create tension by making failure finite, while score systems give skilled players a reason to keep taking risks after survival alone becomes easy. Nothing makes a joystick feel more important than having exactly one life left.

One for quiz night
Street Fighter II reached arcades in 1991 and helped make head-to-head fighting cabinets social magnets. A single machine could produce a queue of challengers and a local pecking order without any online matchmaking at all. Meanwhile, this bit of history is hard to resist: Pong was released by Atari in 1972 and became one of the first major arcade videogame hits. Its entire world is two paddles, one ball and the dangerous discovery that simple rules can eat an afternoon.
