Alternating two-player modes created competition without simultaneous hardware; friends could share one cabinet and still turn every life into a public performance. A related fact is worth keeping: Frogger turned crossing a road into a perfect arcade premise by making every lane a moving timing puzzle with almost no explanation required. A continue screen is thirty seconds of negotiation between pride, curiosity and another coin.

Fact break

Q*bert debuted in 1982 with a pyramid of cubes drawn in a pseudo-3D perspective. Its title character even swore in a made-up symbol language when things went wrong, decades before emoji made that sort of thing feel normal. One more curious detail: Missile Command arrived in 1980 during the Cold War and gives the player no final victory, only increasingly difficult waves until the cities are lost. That bleak structure is unusually honest for a game about stopping incoming missiles.
