Arcade & Classic Games · 41

Difficulty ramps often happen through speed rather than new rules, letting the player understand everything while still losing because the familiar problem stops waiting politely. That connects nicely with a historical detail: A joystick gate can physically restrict movement directions, which is why classic four-way games can feel different on hardware designed for eight-way control. Arcade difficulty rises gently until the game remembers it was built to eat coins.

A quick detour

Dragon's Lair arrived in 1983 using laserdisc video to display hand-drawn animation that looked far more like a cartoon than ordinary arcade graphics. The trade-off was that players had to react to tightly scripted moments rather than roam freely. One more for the mental shelf: Defender hit arcades in 1981 with horizontal scrolling, a radar display and a famously busy control panel. It demanded enough buttons that simply knowing what everything did was part of becoming good at the game.
