Arcade sound effects had to cut through real room noise, which helps explain why classic machines are full of short, sharp tones that remain recognizable decades later. That connects nicely with a historical detail. Galaga let captured fighters become part of the player's strategy: rescuing one could create a more powerful dual-fighter formation at the cost of a larger target. Nothing makes a joystick feel more important than having exactly one life left.

One more thing
Ms. Pac-Man introduced new mazes and more varied ghost behavior, helping prove that a sequel could meaningfully remix an arcade formula rather than merely repeat it. Another thing that sounds made up but is not: Dragon's Lair arrived in 1983 using laserdisc video to display hand-drawn animation that looked far more like a cartoon than ordinary arcade graphics. The trade-off was that players had to react to tightly scripted moments rather than roam freely.
