Arcade & Classic Games · 37

Pattern learning became a classic arcade skill because deterministic enemy behavior rewards players who notice that chaos is sometimes only pretending to be random. A related fact is worth keeping: Q*bert used an isometric pyramid in 1982, making simple hopping controls look like movement through a strange three-dimensional toy. The cabinet may be forty years old; the frustration of missing by one pixel remains completely current.

This actually happened

Breakout was designed around the idea of Pong turned sideways and played against a wall of bricks. A tiny mechanical change created a completely different genre of game. There is another neat detail: Ms. Pac-Man introduced new mazes and more varied ghost behavior, helping prove that a sequel could meaningfully remix an arcade formula rather than merely repeat it.
