Wave structure is elegant pacing: the same controls can feel new when speed, quantity, spacing or enemy behavior changes between rounds. A related fact is worth keeping: Dragon's Lair used LaserDisc animation in 1983, trading free movement for spectacular cartoon visuals far beyond what ordinary arcade hardware could draw in real time. Odd but true

Arcade cabinets charged for attempts, so designers had a financial reason to make games easy to understand but difficult to master. Confusion was bad; challenge was profitable. One more fact worth keeping: Many classic games speed up as the player succeeds. Sometimes that was deliberate design, and sometimes hardware behavior helped create it; either way, difficulty rising with competence became an arcade tradition.
