MUD1, developed in the late 1970s, combined a shared online world with text adventure and role-playing ideas long before 'MMO' became everyday vocabulary. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: A memorable final area usually remixes earlier lessons, turning the ending into proof that the player really learned the world's rules. Fast travel is proof that heroes become much less enthusiastic about scenery after seeing it twelve times.

The curious bit
Baldur's Gate arrived in 1998 and helped revive large computer role-playing games at a time when the genre was considered commercially uncertain. Its party-based adventures helped set the stage for a new wave of CRPGs. Meanwhile, this bit of history is hard to resist: Dungeons & Dragons was first published in 1974 and helped establish the language of character levels, classes, hit points and experience that later computer RPGs borrowed and transformed.
