Mystery House, released in 1980, helped popularize graphical adventure games by adding simple line drawings to the command-driven exploration formula. The player-facing version of the idea is simple. Save points used to be partly a technical constraint, but designers learned to use them as atmosphere: a safe place feels safer when the game visibly lets you stop there. Side quests are what happen when saving the world has a surprisingly flexible deadline.

History got weird here

MUD1 was created in the late 1970s and became an early multiplayer text world. Players shared the same virtual space, explored, fought and chatted long before online fantasy worlds had 3D graphics,or even pictures. The rabbit hole keeps going: Colossal Cave Adventure, created in the 1970s, helped define text adventures. Players explored by typing commands, proving that a world could feel enormous even when the screen showed no graphics at all.
