Fast travel changes the meaning of an RPG map; a location stops being only a destination and becomes part of a network the player gradually unlocks. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Adventure design often works by planting a locked answer early and letting the player carry the question around for hours before the right item or clue appears. Heroes can save kingdoms, but they will still open every cupboard in somebody else's house.

Trivia unlocked

Adventure on the Atari 2600 hid creator Warren Robinett's name inside a secret room. The 1979 game is credited with one of the first famous console-game Easter eggs, created before 'Easter egg' was standard game vocabulary. A separate bit of trivia: Baldur's Gate arrived in 1998 and helped revive large computer role-playing games at a time when the genre was considered commercially uncertain. Its party-based adventures helped set the stage for a new wave of CRPGs.
