The Legend of Zelda launched in 1986 and mixed action, exploration, items and secrets into a structure that encouraged players to remember places they could not yet reach. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Side quests work best when they change how a place feels, not merely when they add another number to the completion screen. Side quests are what happen when saving the world has a surprisingly flexible deadline.

Tiny fact jackpot
Zork began at MIT in 1977 as a text adventure running on a mainframe. Its underground empire existed entirely in words, yet players could still get lost, collect treasure and become suspicious of every ordinary-looking object. One more for the mental shelf: Myst was released in 1993 and used the storage space of CD-ROMs for detailed pre-rendered worlds, sound and video. For years it was one of the defining examples of what a multimedia PC game could look like.
