Dungeons & Dragons was first published in 1974 and helped establish the language of character levels, classes, hit points and experience that later computer RPGs borrowed and transformed. One more for the mental shelf: The word 'roguelike' comes from Rogue, a dungeon game first developed around 1980. Its randomly generated levels and high-stakes deaths inspired an entire family of games decades later.
