Adventure games often hide progression behind knowledge rather than strength; learning a password can be as powerful as finding a better weapon. A related fact is worth keeping: King's Quest in the 1980s made an animated character visibly walk through illustrated scenes, changing how many players imagined a computer adventure should look. Every tavern contains at least one person who has mistaken a total stranger for the perfect solution to a local crisis.

One for quiz night
King's Quest arrived in 1984 and let players visibly walk a character around illustrated scenes instead of navigating only through text. That simple change made the adventure world feel like a place rather than a paragraph. The next fact takes a different route: Myst was released in 1993 and used the storage space of CD-ROMs for detailed pre-rendered worlds, sound and video. For years it was one of the defining examples of what a multimedia PC game could look like.
