MUD1, developed in the late 1970s, combined a shared online world with text adventure and role-playing ideas long before 'MMO' became everyday vocabulary. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Adventure games often hide progression behind knowledge rather than strength; learning a password can be as powerful as finding a better weapon. A suspiciously empty room is the adventure-game equivalent of someone saying 'nothing to worry about.'

Something to tell a friend
Diablo arrived in 1996 with real-time clicking, randomized dungeon layouts and fountains of loot. Its structure made 'just one more floor' an exceptionally dangerous sentence for anyone planning to go to bed. The next bit is equally fun: Adventure on the Atari 2600 hid creator Warren Robinett's name inside a secret room. The 1979 game is credited with one of the first famous console-game Easter eggs, created before 'Easter egg' was standard game vocabulary.
