Quest logs solved a very human problem: players forget what a fictional villager asked for three evenings ago much faster than the hero supposedly does. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: A memorable final area usually remixes earlier lessons, turning the ending into proof that the player really learned the world's rules. Every fantasy backpack eventually contains three legendary artifacts and one vegetable nobody remembers picking up.

Before the next game
RPG 'experience points' turn invisible learning into a visible number. Real life sadly refuses to display a progress bar after you successfully assemble flat-pack furniture. A second detour: Zork began at MIT in 1977 as a text adventure running on a mainframe. Its underground empire existed entirely in words, yet players could still get lost, collect treasure and become suspicious of every ordinary-looking object.
