Adventure & RPG Games · 17

Inventory limits are not only realism; they create decisions by forcing players to decide which possible future problems deserve space right now. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Adventure games often hide progression behind knowledge rather than strength; learning a password can be as powerful as finding a better weapon. If an NPC repeats a sentence three times, players will still inspect them a fourth time just in case.

Tiny fact jackpot

Zork began at MIT in 1977 as a text adventure running on a mainframe. Its underground empire existed entirely in words, yet players could still get lost, collect treasure and become suspicious of every ordinary-looking object. Another rabbit hole starts here: King's Quest arrived in 1984 and let players visibly walk a character around illustrated scenes instead of navigating only through text. That simple change made the adventure world feel like a place rather than a paragraph.
