Early role-playing games often used random encounters partly because memory and storage limits made persistent visible enemy populations much harder to build. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Side quests work best when they change how a place feels, not merely when they add another number to the completion screen. A locked wooden door can defeat a character carrying enough magical equipment to redesign a mountain.

Wait, really?

Fast travel is a design compromise between realism and convenience. Huge worlds feel grand, but very few players want every return trip to take the same twenty minutes. And here is a completely different twist: Secret rooms are a tradition shared by tabletop dungeons and video games. Designers hide them behind suspicious walls, unusual decorations or tiny environmental clues to reward nosy players.
