A locked door is one of gaming's simplest promises: remember this place, because the world intends to become larger later. That connects nicely with a historical detail: The Legend of Zelda launched in 1986 and mixed action, exploration, items and secrets into a structure that encouraged players to remember places they could not yet reach. The real final boss of many adventures is deciding which unfinished side quest you can emotionally abandon.

The fun-history drawer
Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy helped turn menu-driven Japanese RPG combat into a major console tradition during the 1980s, each creating series that continued for generations of hardware. The category has another odd corner too: Pokémon’s original idea was partly inspired by childhood insect collecting. The concept turned collecting, trading and battling into one of gaming’s most recognizable adventure loops.
