MUD1, developed in the late 1970s, combined a shared online world with text adventure and role-playing ideas long before 'MMO' became everyday vocabulary. Dialogue choices create tension without reflexes because the cost is uncertainty; the player rarely knows exactly how another character will interpret a line. A suspiciously empty room is the adventure-game equivalent of someone saying 'nothing to worry about.'

One more thing
Many fantasy RPG maps put dangerous areas farther from the starting point. That simple geography quietly teaches progression without needing a giant sign saying 'do not go here yet'. Another tiny history lesson: Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy helped turn menu-driven Japanese RPG combat into a major console tradition during the 1980s, each creating series that continued for generations of hardware.
