A well-made hub town is a pacing device: combat, story, shopping and recovery all meet in one safe place before the next outward journey. That connects nicely with a historical detail: MUD1, developed in the late 1970s, combined a shared online world with text adventure and role-playing ideas long before 'MMO' became everyday vocabulary. A suspiciously empty room is the adventure-game equivalent of someone saying 'nothing to worry about.'

Fact break
Quest logs solve a problem older role-playing games handled with notebooks. Before on-screen reminders became standard, forgetting what an NPC asked could mean wandering around until memory returned. One more page from the weird history book: Fast travel is a design compromise between realism and convenience. Huge worlds feel grand, but very few players want every return trip to take the same twenty minutes.
