Checkpoint placement changes difficulty more than it first appears; the same obstacle feels harsher when every mistake also repeats a long easy section. The design side has its own twist: Visual noise is expensive in a timing game because every decorative flash competes with the one cue the player actually needs to read. The restart key deserves its own achievement for hours worked.

The fun-history drawer
Balance games often become harder when visual information is removed. The inner ear and body-position sensors help, but your eyes contribute much more to balance than you may notice. Another rabbit hole starts here: Many rhythm games judge inputs in tiny timing windows around a musical beat. The difference between 'perfect' and 'good' can be only a few dozen milliseconds.
