Midway's Gun Fight from 1975 was the first arcade video game to use a microprocessor, a hardware change that helped make more complex animation practical. There is one more layer to consider. A good hit effect answers several questions in milliseconds: did the shot connect, how hard did it hit, and should the player keep firing? The universal shooter mystery is why reloading feels urgent only after stepping out of cover.

The curious bit
DOOM spread in 1993 through a shareware model: the first episode could be distributed freely, while the full game was sold separately. That helped the game travel through offices, schools and home PCs at remarkable speed. Meanwhile, this bit of history is hard to resist: The term 'first-person shooter' became common only after the genre already existed. Earlier games were often described with phrases such as maze game, 3D action game or simply 'like DOOM'.
