Quake pushed first-person action into fully polygonal 3D worlds in the mid-1990s and became enormously influential for networked PC play. One more layer: The reload key is unusual because pressing it at the wrong time can create more danger than doing nothing at all. The shortest route between two objectives is frequently occupied by someone who also knows geometry.

A small but excellent fact
Many shooting games use hit-scan weapons, meaning the game checks a line instantly rather than simulating a visible projectile travelling through space. Others model projectile speed, drop or travel time. One more strange-but-useful detail: Arcade light-gun cabinets often used bright flashes and optical sensors to judge hits. Modern displays made some old light guns incompatible because the technology depended on the timing behavior of CRT televisions.
