Nylon stockings went on sale in the United States in 1940 and became an immediate sensation. During World War II, nylon was redirected toward military uses such as parachutes, making stockings suddenly much harder to find. A second surprise: Ebenezer Butterick helped popularize graded paper sewing patterns in the 1860s. Selling patterns in multiple sizes made it much easier for home sewers to reproduce fashionable garments without drafting every shape from scratch.
